ScreedLite for lightweight, insulating screeds
An insulating and lightweight perlite-based composite screed, ScreedLite comprises a special blend of cement and lightweight, construction-grade insulating perlite aggregate. The correct mix proportions ensure an exceptional lightweight, insulating screed every time.
High quality screeds that offer the following advantages:
- Insulation – Roughly 7 to 8 times the insulating properties of ordinary screeds,
saving significantly on heating and cooling costs
- Lightweight – weighs approximately 25% of conventional screed materials
- Allows for a suitable slope and water run-off on roofs
- Fire protection for up to 4 hours
- Ease of use – just add water
- Inorganic, non-toxic and environmentally-friendly
- Under-tile heating applications prevents downward heat loss
- Lightweight, insulating screed on roof decks
- Slopes-to-fall for water run-off on roof decks
Perlite possesses millions of tiny, glass-like air particles that act as insulation cavities that reduce heat transmission. A significantly higher R-value saves on heating and cooling costs. The thermal conductivity (K-value) of ScreedLite is 0.09497 W/m·K*.
The thermal resistance or “R-values” for ScreedLite is therefore:
The thermal conductivity of traditional cement and sand screeds is between 0.72 W/m·K and 1.13 W/m·K. Taking the medium of 0.93W/m·K, the “R-values” for traditional cement and sand screeds are:
ScreedLite therefore provides roughly 7 to 8 times the insulation of ordinary screeds.
Lightweight, insulating screeds
The loose bulk density of ScreedLite
= 360 – 370kg per m3
The installed weight of ScreedLite = 460 – 470kg per m3
The installed weight of screeds using traditional materials = 2000 – 2200kg per m3
- ScreedLite is non-combustible and releases no smoke or toxic gas
- ScreedLite does not disintegrate or spall when cooled suddenly with a firehose
- ScreedLite offers excellent fire protection for up to 4 hours. It has low linear expansion characteristics which greatly reduce the development of cracks, ensuring that the temperature of the structure and load bearing members is maintained below the critical point at which weakening or failure is likely to occur.
Superior acoustic insulation
Enhances sound absorption through walls
Dampens noise, particularly pulsed sounds
ScreedLite is a recyclable, inorganic volcanic mineral offering excellent thermal insulation properties and energy savings.
Particularly advantageous in green building applications for its energy-efficient properties.
Does not rot or decay.
Can withstand normal wear and tear.
Successfully used around the world in construction since 1946.
ScreedLite is installed in a similar way to ordinary screeds. Perlite particles, however, are more fragile than conventional aggregates and care should be taken to prevent pulverising the particles which will lead to performance loss.
High Return on Investment
A small investment in ScreedLite during the design and construction phase will provide significantly improved thermal insulation properties and ultimately enormous savings in heating and cooling over the life of the building.
ScreedLite can be applied to flat, uneven or curved surfaces.
Reduced construction costs
ScreedLite reduces the demand for structural steel or other support structures.
Slope to drain
Standing water on a roof deck is destructive to roofing membranes and often results in leaks.
ScreedLite can easily be sloped towards drainage points or to the roof edge.
Once placed, it is simply screeded to the desired thickness and slope.
ScreedLite roof decks are seamless and provide a monolithic base for roofing that is smooth and even.
Roofing membranes can also be adhered directly to the ScreedLite using standard fasteners.
Roofing can be applied as soon as the ScreedLite can take traffic and is sufficiently set to adhere to hot asphalt or bitumen. Under normal conditions, this is about three days. Timing will vary according to weather conditions.
How to screed a floor or roof
These instructions are to be used as a guide only as this is not the only bonded screed method in use. Before starting, please ensure that you wear suitable protective clothing, boots, gloves and safety glasses.
